Program Objectives

The program prepares students to support clinical laboratories with maximum accuracy, safety, and operational quality in accordance with NPCE national standards. Key objectives include:

  • Specimen Handling: Collect blood and other non-blood specimens following laboratory protocols; properly label, centrifuge, aliquot, store, and preserve specimens maintaining complete integrity and chain of custody.
  • Specimen Acceptance & Rejection: Identify and apply criteria for specimen acceptance and rejection (e.g., hemolysis, clotting, inadequate volume, identification discrepancies).
  • Laboratory Operations: Master order entry, data entry, and patient records in Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), and assist with basic equipment calibration and maintenance.
  • Safety & Compliance: Maintain full compliance with OSHA standards, CLIA-waived testing guidelines, PPE protocols, biohazard waste disposal, and HIPAA confidentiality regulations.
  • National Certification Prep: Master all NPCE CMLA study modules and pass the national certification examination with confidence.

Professional Functions

Certified Medical Laboratory Assistants (CMLA) serve as essential team members in clinical diagnostics, operating across three primary functional areas:

  • Reception & Specimen Collection: Collect blood specimens via venipuncture and capillary puncture; receive external specimens; verify patient identification and test requisitions; and ensure correct tube order of draw.
  • Processing & Preparation: Centrifuge blood samples; separate serum and plasma; prepare aliquots; distribute specimens to clinical departments (Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Urinalysis, Blood Bank); and maintain temperature-controlled storage.
  • Operational Support & Quality Control: Document quality control records; perform and log CLIA-waived diagnostic tests (e.g., urine dipstick, glucose); sanitize workspaces; and handle hazardous biological waste under OSHA guidelines.
